Alphabet Fun

Today’s book suggestion is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault, illustrated by Lois Ehler.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a  fun colorful book that offers great rhythm, rhyme and repetition to help your children practice their alphabet. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom also offers a kind little lesson at the end about helping one another.

Paint the Alphabet- Toddler Matching Game

First, here’s what you need:

  • watercolor set
  • paint brush (any size)
  • crayons
  • large roll of paper
  • scissors
  • painters tape

Next…..

-Tape up some paper and draw several alphabet letter pairs on the paper.

– Then, give your child some water and a watercolor set and encourage them to paint lines between each matching letter or to trace the letters with their paint brush.

While your child paints you can paint along too! Draw lines from the big A to the other big A. As you watch your child paint, notice which letter she is painting on and take a moment to say, “you’re painting on letter ___” Talk about the shapes of the letters and the types of lines you’ll paint as you connect the letters with lines.

Love & Sharing

Today’s book suggestion is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.

The Giving Tree is and American classic by Shel Silverstein that demonstrates the importance of unconditional love. As parents and caregivers we often feel like the “Tree” in the story and that the constant sacrifices we are making for our children and family can feel over looked at times. The Giving Tree is a great reminder that unconditional love means not always getting a verbal “thank you” but rather embracing the gratification of unspoken appreciation (an important life lesson for our little ones).

How to teach toddlers to share

  1. Practice turn-taking
  2. Praise your toddler when you see her sharing
  3. Don’t punish your toddler for not sharing
  4. Model sharing behavior yourself
  5. Avoid labeling possessions
  6. Make toys communal
  7. Don’t solve your toddler’s social conflicts
