CLIP: Chat with Gabby Ginther, Healthy Families Program Director

Gabby Ginther is the Program Director for Healthy Families, a home visitation program serving expectant and new parents who reside in LaPorte County. Each month, Healthy Families serves 140-145 families, educating parents about their children’s development, sharing tips on nutrition, sleep, potty training and discipline and connecting families to resources in the community. Healthy Families is voluntary and free to families.

Our Family Resource Specialist, Ebony, meets with families shortly after delivery to introduce them to the program. Families who agree to an assessment and who do not have a crib for their child will receive a free crib which we deliver to their home.

Families who wish to enroll have a home visitor assigned to them who meets weekly at their home. The home visitor is caring and kind, listens to parents’ concerns and helps them find answers to questions or problems. Parenting is a tough job, and our staff helps make it easier for parents. Home visitors are a trusted support for parents, and especially during COVID when parents are facing new stressors, they help navigate through these uncertain times.

In addition to sharing parenting tips and information on child development, home visits include developmental screenings to help identify milestones or delays, referrals to community resources and an activity that parents and children can enjoy together. At every visit, every child in the home also receives a new book to help build his or her personal library.

Home visitors also help parents identify and work toward goals. They earn points for keeping appointments, following through on referrals and achieving goals. The points are redeemable at Dunebrook’s Family Depot, which is stocked with diapers, baby wipes, household sanitizers and cleansers, personal care items and brand new learning activities and toys.

Right now, visits are taking place virtually, either by computer or phone. A parent who would like to learn more about Healthy Families can call Dunebrook at 219/874-0007. Information is also available on our website, www.dunebrook.org.

We invite expectant and new parents to learn about all that Healthy Families has to offer.
