Westville Little School is a unique, innovative and creative preschool program offering classes to 3 and 4 year olds. WLS is a collaborative program including Dunebrook, Purdue University Northwest’s Early Childhood Education degree program and Westville Schools. The program’s priority is to successfully transition the family to kindergarten enrollment. The unique entity at WLS is the home-visitor component of the pre-school teacher. Trained in a nationally recognized Healthy Family Program, the Lead Teacher visits the family in their home during the school year in order to support the child and family as best possible for academic success.
WLS also benefits from the classroom and activity instruction that is guided and supported from Purdue Northwest’s ECE degree program professors and students. As the “littles” prepare for kindergarten, PNW students build their skills as developing Early Childhood Education teachers. They add energy, creativity and are mentored by the WLS Lead Teacher as they all facilitate classroom management, oversee lessons, and build relationships with students and their families. Student assessments and screenings (Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning and Ages and Stages) help the Lead Teacher better understand the child’s needs. Community resources are provided to families as needed and daily family communication process are beneficial in the holistic success of the child.
